IS A PREOPERATIVE EVALUATION THE SAME AS SURGICAL CLEARANCE?
Yes, your surgeon wants to make sure your health is optimized for the best surgical outcome for your procedure, so most patients are recommended to have a pre-op exam or surgical clearance.
You may be healthy overall, but the stress from surgery is more than just mental. Your body will undergo physical stress from surgical intervention and anesthesia medications. A preoperative evaluation is especially important for patients who have complicated medical histories or who have underlying conditions that can impact how your case is handled by the surgical team.
As your doctors, we want you to feel physically ready for the procedure and have a better chance of a speedy recovery.
WHAT DOES A PRE-OP PHYSICAL EXAM INVOLVE?
A preoperative medical evaluation or Pre-op typically includes a complete physical examination, along with some additional elements:
• Discuss any chronic conditions you have and medications you take
• Assess risk factors that may lead to cardiac, pulmonary, or infectious complications
• Review your anesthesia history
• Review any allergies or reactions you have had to certain types of medications
Based on the findings of this medical evaluation, your medical history and the type of surgery you are scheduled to undergo, you may need testing in addition to what your surgeon is requesting to be better prepared for your surgery.
